Jim Pase

Currently a detective with 13 years experience in local enforcement.  He began his studies in Isshin-Ryu karate 12 years ago under Sensei Black.  He’s been one of the dojo’s finest fighters and certainly its hardest and most diligent worker in the past 20 years.  Sensei Pase is currently ranked Yon-Dan (4th Degree Black Belt) and he also graduated with a Masters Degree in Business from Dowling College.

Michael Costa

Began studying with Sensei Black in 1991 as an 11 year old.  He was our dojos version of a prodigy.  By the time he was a teenager he could compete with the majority of our adult students.  He went on to win many local tournaments in fighting and was inducted into Don Nagle’s AOKA Hall of Fame as the outstanding fighter of the year in 2004.  Sensei Costa also has a background in ground fighting and Brazilian Jujitsu.  He is currently ranked Yon-Dan (4th Degree Black Belt).  He graduates with a bachelors degree this year from Stony Brook University and has been accepted into accepted into Law School.

Lee Snyder

Started his Martial Arts training with Sensei Black in 1989, currently teaches children, adults and children with special needs.  Sensei Snyder is a former member of the Army’s 101st Airborne division.  He currently competes in various IronMan triathlons across the United States.  He is currently ranked Go-Dan (5th Degree Black Belt).

Jerry Mosca

Started his Martial Arts training 16 years ago under Sensei Black.  He made a courageous comeback after a serious car accident that almost cost him the loss of his left leg some years back.  With his heart and his spirit he came back stronger then ever and became Sensei’s latest black belt.  He’s also earned the title of “Dai Sampai” Sensei’s leader among all students.  He’s currently ranked Sho-Dan (1st Degree Black Belt).

Frank Montalbano

Sensei Montalbano began training in boxing at the age of 18 in Hempstead, N.Y. under trainer and referee Arthur Mercante (Ali- Fraizer, Sugar Ray Leonard fights, etc.). Started USA Goju under Sensei Kenneth Nilsen who trained under legendary Peter Urban. Studied Kempo Karate with Steve Walsh former USA Budweiser karate team (with Tokey Hill). In 1989 he was introduced to Isshinryu Karate training under Sensei Frank Black student of Grandmaster Ed McGrath. In 1994 he was promoted to Black Belt (Sho- Dan) becoming Sensei Black’s first black belt. Promoted to San-Dan (3rd Degree) black belt in 2000. Shortly after his move to Florida, Sensei Montalbano opened Weston Dojo, training neighborhood teens in Isshinryu Karate and Self defense.  In 2001  he began training Muay Thai kickboxing with Master Mike Lee Kanarek. Currently training Haganah (Krav- Maga) Isreali commando hand to hand combat under Master Mike Lee 5th degree black belt in Sunrise Florida. Greg Goldsholl

Began Martial Arts training in 1971 at age 4 ½ under Master Duk Sung Son- World Tae Kwon Do.  Continued study in American Tae Kwon Do under Ed Dietch earning the rank of Black Belt.  In 1987 Sensei Goldsholl had the opportunity to meet and begin training under future Isshin-Ryu Grandmaster Ed McGrath; who trained under the legendary Don Nagle.  Earning the rank of Shodan and later San Dan under Shihan Frank Black.  In 1990 developed and founded “The Last Resort” self-defense system which has been taught to thousands of people.  Instructed several thousand 5-15 year old students for the Young Olympians program.  A low cost way to provide instruction to underprivileged children.  Regularly consults local law enforcement on arrest control techniques and high risk low frequency situations.  He was inducted into the USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame and received his Doctorate of Martial Arts Philosophy; Ph.D from the University of Asian Martial Arts Studies.

Mike Adrid

I started my Martial Arts journey early in 1971 as a member of the Tae Kwan Do, Korean Tang Soo Do Association but after six months postponed my training to join the Los Angeles County Marshal’s Department.  In 1974, I started attending instruction of Sensei Robert Koga.  The Koga Method is specifically designed for Public Safety Personnel dealing with Arrest Control, Self Defense and Baton Techniques. The Method’s background is based on traditional Japanese martial arts.  I have continued to attend Sensei Koga’s classes, becoming a Senior Instructor.  As the Marshal’s Department training Sergeant, I was responsible for training all deputy personnel regarding Arrest Control and Baton for approximately 3 years.  In 1977, I became a part-time instructor at Rio Hondo Police Academy and have continued to instruct at the Academy for the past 31 years. Over that time period, I have taught approximately 15,000 deputies and officers, from over 40 public service and police agencies these techniques. The Marshal’s Department merged with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in 1994, and as a Lieutenant I continued to instruct personnel Arrest and Control techniques.  Over the years I have practiced other forms of martial arts to enhance my knowledge. I have studied Aikido under Shidan Pablo Vasquez, Jiu-Jitsu under Rorion Gracie (Gracie Jiu-Jitsu), Justin Ellison (Walt Bayless Combat Jiu-Jitsu) and Roy Harris (Roy Harris International).  I received my 1st Degree Black Belt in Isshin Ryu Karate from Sensei Greg Goldsholl.  I am an instructor for The Last Resort, a self-defense system for woman; G.R.A.P.L.E Instructor, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu; Apprentice Level Grappling Instructor, Roy Harris International; a part-time instructor at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, for Public Safety officers and nursing staff and owner of On The Mat, LLC, teaching private lessons the last 10 years.  Mike was inducted into the USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame and received his Doctorate of Martial Arts Philosophy; Ph.D from the University of Asian Martial Arts Studies.
